How to make a quick and easy homemade strawberry milkshake recipe that the whole family will love. Perfectly thick and creamy frozen treat that makes the ultimate dessert for potlucks, picnics, the 4th of July or any other summer social!

I think it's safe to say that my kids are ice cream fanatics. Back in Arkansas, we used to go to this burger joint in town all the time, the Susie Q Malt Shop, just because they had the BEST milkshakes for a hot summer day. Eventually I decided to make my own homemade vanilla milkshake recipe, and now I've finally perfected this delicious strawberry milkshake recipe!

Ingredients & Substitutions Notes

This recipe uses only a handful of ingredients. You may already have everything you need…

  • Strawberries – I usually use fresh strawberries just because they are easier to blend up, but you can also use frozen strawberries if that's all you have on hand. In fact, using frozen strawberries might result in a frostier, slightly thicker milkshake. But nothing beats the natural sweetness of fresh berries at the peak of spring strawberry season!
  • Vanilla Ice Cream – This recipe calls for vanilla ice cream for an extra creamy texture, but you can also use strawberry ice cream for an even stronger strawberry flavor. Any brand will work, so just use whatever you can get at your local grocery store.
  • Whole Milk – I use whole milk for the richest, creamiest strawberry milkshake, but you can also use 2% milk or even skim milk for this recipe. Just keep in mind that if you use anything other than whole milk, you may have to adjust the quantity used ever so slightly. I recommend starting with less; then you can add more milk until you reach the desired milkshake consistency.

How to Make Homemade Strawberry Milkshakes

The secret to making the best strawberry milkshake is to chill your milkshake glasses in the freezer for at least 10 minutes before making the recipe. Using an already-cold glass will keep your milkshake perfectly thick and creamy. You'll also want to get your blender ready.

Prep the Berries

  1. Start by washing your fresh strawberries in a large bowl, and then pat them dry with paper towels or on a tea towel.
  2. Once they're good and dry, cut off the strawberry tops, and slice the strawberries into halves with a paring knife before adding to your blender jar.

TIP: I like to let all fresh berries soak in a bowl of water with an added splash of vinegar for a few minutes before rinsing and patting dry.

How to Mix Up Your Strawberry Milkshake Recipe

  1. Once you've got all your strawberries sliced up, go ahead and add them to your blender jar with your scoops of vanilla ice cream and milk.
  2. Blend for ten to twelve seconds, 'til everything is well combined.

That's it! At this point you can add more or less ice cream for a thicker texture, or more or less milk for a thinner texture, pulsing a few times after each addition until you've reached the desired consistency.

How to Serve Strawberry Milkshakes

Finally, pour your fresh strawberry milkshake into the frozen milkshake glasses. Then top off the tall glasses with a big dollop of homemade whipped cream and fresh or chopped strawberries, and serve!

Expert Tips and Recipe FAQ's

Can I make this recipe dairy free?

Yes, you can make this a dairy free strawberry milkshake. First of all, you'll need to use a dairy free vanilla ice cream. Then for the milk, I recommend substituting with almond, cashew or oat milk. The consistency will be slightly thinner, but the taste will be just as delicious!

Can I make this a sugar free strawberry milkshake?

While as it's not possible to make a 100% sugar-free milkshake, you can certainly make a low-sugar strawberry milkshake. First you'll need to use a no sugar added vanilla ice cream, and then you'll need to use a low-sugar milk alternative, like unsweetened almond milk, unsweetened cashew milk, unsweetened coconut milk or unsweetened flax milk. That's it!

How can I store leftover strawberry milkshake?

I recommend drinking your homemade milkshakes fresh, as milkshakes can tend to get hard and icy after being refrozen. That said, you can store leftovers in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months, but you'll have to let it thaw out for a while before it's thin enough to drink. In fact, you may even have to run it through the blender again before serving.

Optional Add-Ins and Toppings Variations

Looking for more toppings or add-ins to give this easy strawberry milkshake recipe a little “oomph”? Here are a few ideas…

  • Add sliced bananas to the mixture before blending to make this a homemade strawberry banana milkshake!
  • Toss in a drop of vanilla extract to make this the perfect treat.
  • You can also add chopped walnuts to your strawberry desserts. If you go this route, I recommend freezing the walnuts ahead of time so that they're nice and cold going into the blender.
  • If you're feeling ambitious, blend in cheesecake for the best strawberry cheesecake milkshake.
  • Don't forget about the toppings! In addition to whipped cream and strawberries, you can add chocolate shavings, chocolate chips, chocolate syrup, or even strawberry jam to the top of the milkshakes. The sky is the limit when it comes to milkshake toppings.
