How do I find out if there's a power outage in my area? ›

Outages typically last 1-2 hours.

As the USDA notes in Keeping Food Safe During an Emergency, your refrigerator will keep food safe for up to 4 hours during a power outage. Keep the door closed as much as possible. Discard refrigerated perishable food such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and leftovers after 4 hours without power.

To shower when the power is out, your home needs a traditional tank-style water heater. If that water heater still has hot water in reserve, then you can take a warm shower. If you plan to take a shower, you need to do it soon after the power goes out.

Traditional Telephone Service: during a power outage, your telephone service will still be operational. However, if you have telephone equipment that requires you to plug it into an electrical outlet in order to make and/or receive calls such as a cordless phone, it may not work during a power outage.

Depending on the amount of water remaining in the pipes, you might be able to flush your toilet several times while the power is out. Eventually, however, your tank won't fill up anymore because the pumps are down. When this happens, you will need to flush your toilet manually by pouring in a bucket of water.

In recent years, Las Vegas has seen an increase in outages due to extreme weather conditions and other factors. The city's power grid is not without its faults and this has led to major power outages in certain parts of the city.

Boulder City receives most of its power from renewable hydroelectric sources (Hoover Dam and Glen Canyon Dam on Lake Powell).

Use a receptacle voltage tester by plugging the device into the outlet. The lights on the device will come on to indicate the presence of a live electrical current. Test an electrical outlet with a non-contact voltage tester by holding the tester about an inch away from the short slot on the outlet.

Confirm your power is out

Check your main electric panel to see if a breaker tripped. Fuses keep circuits from overheating, causing a fire or damaging devices. Try to find out what caused the problem. Disconnect anything on that circuit before you flip the breaker back on.

Food spoilage and other similar claims should be made promptly. Such claims are paid only if they are submitted and resolved within one year from the date of the incident. Generally, the statute of limitations for filing an action involving personal injury is two years from the date of the incident.
